Something Inside my Soul Trembles

How quickly the skies have darkened
   as tall trees begin to sway!
The birds comfort their nestlings
   and young squirrels scurry away.

Cold air cuts hard through summer,
   as thunder resounds through the vale;
a cottontail bounds through a thicket
   and startles a covey of quail!

Out in the pasture the yearlings
   rush to their mothers in fear.
The trampled grass takes on an ominous hue
   as the force of the fierce storm draws near.

Creek-fish will soon face the flooding;
   against their will they will fall
far, far away from our valley
   with no hope of returning at all.

And something inside my soul trembles
   as the wild storm passes us by;
something inside my soul trembles
   like thunder from deep in the sky.
